While the United States elected Donald Trump as its president on November 9, the ceremony was punctuated with political allusions. Model Gigi Hagid, who co-hosted the evening alongside Jay Pharoah, opened the ball with an imitation of the new First Lady, Melania Trump.
The new president was also strongly criticized by the musicians of Green Day. While playing their last single “Bang Bang”, the band members took advantage of a pause in the lyrics to shout “No to Trump, not to Ku Klux Klan, not to Fascist America!”. The group had already posted its rejection of Donald Trump on several occasions, including at the MTV EMA Awards.

Among the other performances of the evening, Lady Gaga moved the room interpreting its title “Million reasons” under a starry sky. The superstar showed that she still had a voice and dazzled the audience in a magical setting.
Another highlight in emotion, Selena Gomez was crowned best female pop-rock artist. It was the first appearance of the singer since last August. She had reported lupus and wanted to get away from the media. Back on stage, she delivered a poignant speech, thanking her fans. “You’re so loyal, I do not know what I did to deserve that,” the singer said in tears.
The rapper Drake also won several awards. The Canadian was awarded the Best Male Hip Hop Award, Best Hip-Hop Album of the Year for “Views” and Best Hip-Hop Song. Among the other winners, Justin Bieber was crowned best male pop / rock artist and his album “Purpose” was also rewarded. As for the Artist of the Year award, it was awarded to Ariana Grande.
